The Lumos, claimed to be the world's first smart bicycle helmet, is nearing production after a highly successful Kickstarter campaign that secured over 7,000 pre-order sales since August 2015.
The CPSC and EN certified helmet weighs just 410g and packs more than 60 LEDs, a three-axis accelerometer, and a 1,000mAH USB rechargeable battery. Two arrow-shaped lights at the rear edges function as turn indicators, controlled by a wireless handlebar-mounted remote.
Between the rear indicators sits a triangle of LEDs that serves as a high-level rear lamp. When the built-in accelerometer detects deceleration, all three rear light clusters illuminate simultaneously in a static red state, functioning as an automatic brake light — similar to the brake lights on a car.
At the front, additional LEDs provide forward visibility as well as forward-facing indicators. It is worth noting that none of the lights on this helmet are designed to replace a primary light source for night riding.
Designed with simplicity in mind, the Lumos charges via USB and offers a battery life of approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes per charge. The helmet is also water-resistant, so commuters need not worry about getting caught in the rain. Available in one adult size, a dial-based retention system ensures a fit for head circumferences ranging from 54 to 62 cm.
Early backers are expected to receive their helmets by the end of August, with discounted pre-orders still available at £112 / US$134 (retail price £138 / US$165). Wider rollout is anticipated from October.
